Nirukta Chapter XI.25 “….How hast thou crossed the waters of the Rasa? Rasa, a river, is derived from (the verb) ras, meaning to make a sound. Panis are not humans, just because they are described as merchants. Panis are demons who refused to offer gifts and worship (Brbu is an exception here), and are also traders.
